Cardiac Disease

The cardiac diet emphasizes foods with heart-healthy fats, whole grains and reduced sodium; these foods are beneficial for heart health. The diet also limits processed foods that are high in sugar and salt, as these increase the risk of heart disease.

Choose heart-healthy carbohydrates while increasing your soluble fiber intake. Limit refined carbohydrates, such as table sugar, sweets, and beverages sweetened with added sugar.

Decrease saturated fat by choosing lean protein and low-fat dairy products, these monounsaturated fats and omega-3 polyunsaturated fats are good for your heart’s health. Try to reduce fat through your protein choices by choosing very lean cuts of beef or pork as well as fish and poultry.

Select foods with no-sodium or low-sodium to take charge of the salt content in what you eat. Use as little salt in cooking as possible.
